KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 - UPM continued its outstanding achievement by winning 10 award at the 19th International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX) held in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from 9th – 11th May 2008 recently.
UPM sent 11 innovative R&D products to compete at the ITEX’s two main categories; Invention Competition and Malaysia Innovative Product Award.
For the category of Invention Competition, two Gold Medal were won by Professor Dr. Raja Noor Zaliha Raja Abd Rahman (Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences) with the product of L2 Lipase: A Thermostable Enzyme for Industrial Applications and Prof. Madya Dr. Lai Oi Ming (Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences) with the product of Production of Palm-based Anti Obesity Functional Oil.
Dr. Lai also won INS special award for Best Invention in Health Product for the same product.
Meanwhile, three silver medals won by Professor Dr. Fatimah Md. Yusoff (Institute of Bioscience/Faculty of Science) with the product of Mass Production of Pure and Halal Tropical Microalgae Using Photobioreators, Prof. Madya Dr. Sabira Khatun (Faculty of Engineering) with the product of Smart Auto Driven Vehicle (SADV) System, and Dr. Annie Christianus (Faculty of Agriculture) with the product of A Recirculating System Designed for the Culture of Horseshoe Crab Larvae.
Two bronze medals were won by Prof. Dr. Azni Idris and Dr. Norhafizah Abdullah, both of them from Faculty of Engineering.
For the category of ‘Malaysia Innovative Product Award’, both competed products from Faculty of Engineering succeeded to obtain recognition. Those were Ohmic Heated Pasteurizer by Prof. Dr. Norman Mariun and Machine for Making Jam by Rosnah Shamsudin.
The exhibition which was officiated by the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Hou Kok Chung is an annual event organized by Malaysia Inventions and Design Society since 1989.
This year’s exhibition featured more than 500 inventions, covering more than 24 industries from Malaysia, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Iran, Croatia, Australia and Italy.
