Researchers at the Nano Life Science Institute (WPI-NanoLSI) at Kanazawa University have directly visualized how enzymes find and break DNA molecules in real time. Using high-speed atomic force microscopy, the team followed individual enzymes as they moved along DNA and found that they repeatedly returned to vulnerable regions before breaking them apart. The findings reveal how the structure of DNA influences its vulnerability to enzymatic breakdown.

Scientists have shown that the two exponents (inelastic scattering exponent and dephasing exponent) commonly used to describe electron scattering in graphene do not necessarily follow the same behavior. Using gated epitaxial graphene, a multi-institutional team of researchers independently extracted the two exponents through current-heating measurements and weak-localization analysis.

Why are individual investors, commonly known as “retail investors”, prone to losing money in the stock market? A Lingnan University joint study of more than 4,600 Chinese and US stocks finds that investors are less likely to buy stocks blindly when they understand the difference between a company’s “reported earnings” and its “actual cash flows”. The research team used social media to explain the difference between the two, and to teach investors how to analyse relevant company data.

Rust usually takes months or years to form naturally, but researchers at Tohoku University found a way to speed it up dramatically. By blasting iron powder in water with ultrasound, they triggered the formation of spinel-type iron oxide nanoparticles in as little as 24 hours, no chemicals required. The technique could offer a greener route to materials used in magnets, catalysts, and biomedical applications.

Climate models contain biases that can affect the reliability of future climate projections. We investigated how sea surface temperature (SST) biases affect the North Pacific westerly jet. In 34 of 35 climate models, the jet was located farther south when SSTs were simulated rather than prescribed from observations. Additional experiments showed that SST biases, particularly in the northwestern Pacific, play an important role in this southward shift.
