Prof. Guoliang Xing and Prof. Angela Yingjun Zhang from the Department of Information Engineering, Faculty of Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) have been elected Fellows of the prestigious Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in the class of 2020. Prof. Guoliang Xing was elected for his remarkable contributions to “sensor networks and low-power wireless networks”, while Prof. Angela Yingjun Zhang’s was accredited for her research on “resource allocation and optimization in wireless communications.” There are currently 35 IEEE Fellows among 110 professors in the Faculty of Engineering at CUHK.

Two scientific research projects conducted by researchers of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) have received Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards (Science and Technology) 2018 from the Ministry of Education (MoE), including a second-class award in natural sciences, and another second-class award in technological innovation. A recent study on children’s appraisals of gender nonconformity (GN) and a related intervention, led by researchers from the Gender Development Laboratory, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in collaboration with The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the University of Toronto Mississauga, reveals that a simple intervention may change the biases in the perception of young children against peers who break gender norms. The findings have been published in Child Development, the flagship journal of the Society for Research in Child Development.

By combining a compressive sensing algorithm with a digital holographic microscope, Prof. Shih-Chi CHEN of the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and his research team have developed a high-speed imaging method. The new approach is able to produce two-photon microscopy images of a 3D sample in one second, which is at a speed three to five times that of the conventional point-scanning method. The research result has been published in the journal Optics Letters recently.
