The latest QS World University Rankings was released on 16th September 2014 which showed that Univesity of Malaya has moved up 16 positions from 167 in 2013 to 151 in 2014. This is the best UM has achieved since QS first published a ranking of the world’s universities.

Giants in history

Physicist Narinder Singh Kapany (31 October 1926 – 4 December 2020) pioneered the use of optical fibres to transmit images, and founded several optical technology companies. Born in Punjab, India, he worked at a local optical instruments factory before moving to London for PhD studies at Imperial College. There, he devised a flexible fibrescope to convey images along bundles of glass fibres.
